Strajk w sektorze usług publicznych doprowadził do tego, że w środę 10.02.2010 ateńskie lotnisko odwołało liczne loty. Widocznie wielu podróżnych nie zostało o tym poinformowanych, gdyż na próżno wyczekiwali godziny startu swojego samolotu. Również niektóre szkoły i urzędy nie działały z powodu strajku. W sumie w Atenach 10 tysięcy ludzi wyszło na ulicę w ramach akcji protestacyjnej, a w Salonikach około 3 tysięcy.
Poprzez transparenty dawali upust swojej złości i rozgoryczeniu przypisując winę za kryzys i jego dramatyczne skutki bankierom, przedsiębiorcom i politykom. Ten 24-godzinny protest stanowił pierwszy poważny test dla greckiego rządu czy nie ugnie się i pozostanie konsekwentnym w obranej polityce by zrobić wszystko, co możliwe, aby wyciągnąć kraj z fatalnego położenia ekonomicznego.
Wielu jednak nie zważając na nawoływania związków zawodowych do strajku nie opuściło pracy. Jak pokazują badania ankietowe przeprowadzone przed ponad tygodniem, wielu obywateli popiera plany oszczędnościowe rządu i wyraża aprobatę na drastyczne reformy, gdyż ma świadomość, że nie ma innej drogi na wyjście z tej patowej sytuacji. Jednocześnie około połowa ankietowanych nie popiera planów podniesienia wieku emerytalnego, ale niemal 65% okazało zrozumienie dla ostrych i zdecydowanych kroków rządu.
Minister finansów Jorgos Papakonstantinou ogłosił, że planowane jest podniesienie przeciętnego wieku emerytalnego o dwa lata oraz zamrożenie pensji w sektorze publicznym, co pozwoli na zaoszczędzenie w tym roku 800 milionów euro. Socjalistyczny rząd zamierza również zreformować podatki.
Demonstranci zebrani przed siedzibą parlamentu zapatrują się na tę sprawę zupełnie inaczej. Uważają, że zapędy rządu dotkną przede wszystkim uboższą warstwę ludności. To biedniejsi będą zmuszeni do poniesienia konsekwencji kryzysu. Zdaniem protestujących osoby zamożne w ogóle na tym nie ucierpią. Protestują przede wszystkim przeciwko wspomnianemu wyżej zamrożeniu płac i podwyższeniu wieku emerytalnego.
W ubiegłym tygodniu czołowi politycy Unii Europejskiej zawarli porozumienie w sprawie udzielenia Grecji pomocy w celu zwalczenia deficytu budżetowego i zadłużenia. Poinformował o tym prezydent UE Herman Van Rompuy nie wymieniając jednak żadnych szczegółów. W rozmowach wzięli także udział: szef Komisji Europejskiej José Manuel Barroso, prezydent Francji Nicolas Sarkozy, kanclerz Niemiec Angela Merkel, szef Europejskiego Banku Centralnego Jean-Claude Trichet, premier Grecji Jeorgios Papandreou, jak i premierzy Hiszpanii i Portugalii, kolejnych państw strefy euro trawionych przez poważne problemy natury gospodarczej.
